Belichick Wins 300th, Boogeymen Dominate, Offense Flows in Pats Win Over Browns

FOXBOROUGH, MANearly 40 years after being fired from Cleveland Browns, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick won his 300th career game against his former team.

The Patriots beat up on the Browns pretty good on Sunday afternoon as the “boogeymen” defense dominated once again in a 27-13 rainy day victory.

When asked one word to describe his head coach, WR Julian Edelman said “I don’t really have a good vocabulary. GOAT is overused.” Edelman paused and then said “My one word is a Mchine! He’s a machine.”

New England became the first NFL team in 2019 to have 8 wins as they improved to a perfect 8-0 on the season. Quarterback Tom Brady threw for 259 yards as he hit Edelman eight times for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Newly acquired WR Mohamed Sanu had two catches as he was on the field for over 35 of the possible 60 offensive snaps. After the game, Sanu said he’s “enjoying” his time with the Patriots so far. Who wouldn’t? Sanu was traded from a now 1-7 Falcons squad to an 8-0 juggernaut.

As usual, the Patriots defense didn’t disappoint. New England forced three turnovers on three straight Cleveland plays in the first quarter. The “boogeymen” have now forced a league-high 25 turnovers this season and it’s only October.

When asked what the simultaneous success of both the offense and defense does for the team, here’s what DB Jason McCourty had to say:

The Patriots defense held Browns QB Baker Mayfield to just 194 yards, including a bizarre interception in which he basically handed the ball to DT Lawrence Guy. A surprise came when RB Nick Chubb practically ran the ball down the throat of the defense as he accumulated over 130 rushing yards. Even when the Patriots defense seemed to have a letdown, the highs outweighed the lows as they forced Chubb to fumble twice. One of those fumbles occurring on a great hustle play from DB Jonathan Jones who punched the ball out of Chubb’s hands.

Stephon Gilmore put it perfectly postgame as he said the win is “Great. It’s not perfect but the thing about this team is we keep fighting.” Gilmore went on to reflect that this Patriots defense is “playing comfortably together”.

The Patriots defense continues to improve every week. New England is currently still ranked as the top overall defensive unit in the entire NFL, showing no signs of wearing down. New England travels to Baltimore this Sunday to face an elusive Lamar Jackson and the Ravens in primetime.

Another cool story surrounding this past Sunday’s game was backup Right Guard James Ferentz who started in place of Shaq Mason. Ferentz had a special night as he stepped in and embodied the “next man in” mentality that seems to be the motto going forward for the Patriot team. As Edelman quoted me below- #GottaBelieve:

Postgame, Belichick recapped his 300th career win the only way Bill Belichick would by saying “the only thing better than 300 is 301.”
